How inflammation leaves its mark on the brain.

Our research explores relationships between inflammation, cognition and mental health in different settings. Published findings help shape new questions and guide subsequent studies.

Research agenda

Inflammation, cognition and mental health

A research agenda exploring relationships between systemic inflammation, brain changes, and cognitive and psychiatric outcomes. It brings together research questions across clinical settings, with methods and participation requirements defined for each study.

Approach

From systemic exposure to cognitive phenotype.

We investigate associations between inflammatory processes, cognitive measures, biomarkers and neuroimaging. Each study’s design determines what its results can establish about mechanisms and causal relationships.

Results are presented in line with the supporting evidence; preliminary findings are not communicated as definitive conclusions.

Cognition
Neuropsychological assessment and analysis of performance across cognitive domains, according to the research protocol.
Biomarkers
Investigation of inflammatory and neurodegeneration markers. The SIMOA SR-X platform is being set up; assays and access depend on setup and validation. Explore the platform ↗
Neuroimaging
Structural MRI acquired outside CTMM and PET/CT, according to the study design and technical assessment of each protocol.
fUSI and pharmaco-fUSI
Functional ultrasound imaging for preclinical investigations of cerebral hemodynamics and responses to drugs. Explore applications and services ↗
Genomics
Molecular and genetic research, including target quantification by digital PCR, according to the assay. Explore the platform ↗
Integration
Integration of cognitive and biological measures according to each study’s questions and design.
Research infrastructure

Support that expands our research.

The ICONEUS One fUSI platform was acquired with funding from Finep. The SIMOA SR-X, which is being set up, was acquired with support from Fapemig.
